Korea is expected to be a ‘super-aged nation’ by 2025

Korean community still struggles to cope with the fast increase in senior citizens. This phenomenon has also affected an increase in the ‘lonely death’ of elderly people. The causes behind their silent death are complex; however, experts have argued that not having anyone to talk with, or to listen to their piled-up concerns is one of the triggers to their extreme decision of dying alone.

The Challenge

How might we relieve Korean senior citizens’ social loneliness and improve their mental health while reassuring their presence as a part of community/society?

Interview Data Points & Takeaways

After talking with a number of Korean elderly people and analyzing their interviews, key data points were summarized under three categories: Smartphone usage, Pain points of using smartphones, and Maintaining mental health. These data points were then narrowed down into two takeaways.

The Intervention

There was a need of creating a platform that connects senior citizens with each other not only to increase their social interaction but also to cope with their mental health.

Considering the said takeaways, it was important to develop a holistic approach to guide senior users to take care of their mental health via different means of interactions and communication through their smartphones.

Why A Mobile Application?

Irrespective of their age, senior citizens are fully aware of smartphones and are willing to use them. As of 2017, 76% of Korean citizens aged over 60 own smartphones. Despite their interest in new tech and devices, mobile apps and interfaces are designed mostly for younger target audiences. As a result, many elderly citizens have difficult times trying to utilize those apps and often give up. If an app that is senior-user friendly is in the market with big, bold, and legible fonts, to-the-point illustrations and icons, and easy and succinct interfaces, more elderly people will be encouraged to try out and break the perception that older people do not know how to use smartphones.

Information Architecture

Keeping simplicity, legibility, and intuition in mind, the info arch of the application was narrated. As the app aims to be holistic, it consisted of six different services that senior citizens often utilize with their smartphones.
