Our planet can only produce a finite amount of resources that must be used prudently in our everyday lives.

With the current growing consumption, in spite of people’s consciousness, not much is put into action resulting in loss of ecological balance with the environment facing severe consequences.

The Challenge

How might we use design thinking to educate and implement techniques of sustainable living for the millennial community?

Stakeholder Map

A stakeholder map was plotted to figure out who and which entities are to be considered pertaining to our challenge.

Interviews

As part of primary research, the Millennials residing in Savannah were interviewed to understand their perception of sustainability and the 3R lifestyle.

The interviewees were aware of the importance of the 3R; however, they were often frustrated as it is often hard to practice and they were skeptical about the quality of utilizing second-hand furniture or clothes.

Cultural Probe

The team created a cultural probe to further gauge people’s feelings and reactions toward the 3R lifestyle. A working wheel was created in which participants were prompted to spin. Then they answered the questions as per where the arrow from the wheel landed.

The collected responses were analyzed into a chart to visualize how people reacted to the six categories concerning the 3R.

Affinitization

Rounds of affinitization were conducted with data collected from both secondary and primary research. The sticky notes were clustered into six core insights which later became our design criteria for concept development.

Value Proposition

After analyzing all collected data, a value proposition was developed to decide what aspects to be prioritized for the solution.

Concept Sketch & Development

The team brainstormed ideas and sketched out a variety of possible ideas that can be implemented into the final solution.

The brainstormed ideas were filtered down into three solutions which are shown below.

Solution Strategy

The team built a solution strategy map to understand how each solution resonates with collected insights and the value proposition. This process was helpful to refine the solution to be more feasible and tangible.

Prototyping & User Testing

Rounds of user testing with our mid-fi prototypes were conducted. Testees were asked to write their feedback on a sticky note. The testing sessions were helpful as they helped the team to check the flow of the service and integrate critical comments into our final prototypes.

Final Solution

Re:form is an interactive service that promotes a holistic 3R experience to the Millennial users. Users are able to not only gain information on recycling but also have opportunities to swap and sell their items with others within their neighboring communities through 'Sharedrobe' feature.

How Sharedrobe Works

The features of Sharedrobe were visualized into an 8-step infographic. Sharedrobe consists of public easy-to-use and trustworthy community-based wardrobes that can be utilized through the app Re:form in order to enhance users' experience and practice of reusing and rewearing.
